Historic Dekalb Courthouse Wedding

Sometimes referred to as The Courthouse on The Square, this historic location is a unique space for celebrations of all kinds. The marble-lined walls surround the terrazzo floor bathed in sunlight, thanks to the large arched windows on two sides of the old Courtroom. This ballroom is a delightful spot for small to medium-sized weddings and events.

This wedding album showcases a glamorous couple at a beautiful location as they celebrate their nuptials with family and friends. We took full advantage of the picturesque Square out in front of the building and couldn't resist having the bride and groom walk between the tables in front of the many restaurants that line the plaza. This opens the possibilities for some wedding photojournalism. Their Courthouse on the Square wedding is one they and their guests will remember for a long time.

Ceremony Space

The main venue space is the old Courtroom, boasting about twenty-six hundred square feet. This space can comfortably accommodate one hundred to one hundred and fifty guests for a plated dinner. It usually hosts the wedding ceremony and then flips for the reception. The white and gray Alabama marble-clad walls reflect light from the large arched windows making the space bright and airy. The room is a perfect canvas for wedding designers and event planners, bringing a couple's vision to fruition. And an Atlanta wedding photographer's dream location for soft romantic images.

Wedding picture opportunities

The Courtroom: The marble-lined Courtroom is an excellent place to start your wedding pictures for weddings at this venue—the windows about ten feet high open lots of creativity for the photographer and an adventurous subject. The light-colored walls also have an ethereal dream-like feel in the photographs.

The Building exterior: The heavily textured granite exterior with its massive columns is an inviting backdrop for photographs of the couple in front of this historic landmark. Be it daytime portraits or the nighttime sendoff, you'll hit a home run every time.

The Gazebo: For weddings occurring earlier in the day, the Gazebo area is ideal for portraits of the bride and groom. Due to its large size, it helps us to manipulate the light as photographers better.

A brief History of the Historic Dekalb County Courthouse

There have been numerous iterations of the Dekalb County courthouses before what we now know as the Historic Dekalb County Courthouse, or The Courthouse on The Square, built in 1918. The current Decatur wedding venue escaped demolition soon after Dekalb County constructed its new Judicial Building complex in 1968. It also didn't meet the fiery fate of some of its predecessors.

A January eighteen forty-two midnight fire destroyed the Courthouse built in eighteen twenty-nine. Its replacement, a Greek Revival style red brick two-story building, made it through the Battle of Decatur in eighteen sixty-four; it was time for a new facility in eighteen ninety-eight. The Neoclassical style replacement, with up-to-date amenities for its time. It served the county for about eighteen years before the firefighters were pressed into duty again to save the seat of justice in Dekalb County.

And thus, the Historic Decakb County Courthouse as we know it today was rebuilt. In nineteen seventy-one, the building became the third Metropolitan Atlanta facility to make it onto the National Register of Historic Places. The Dekalb Historical Society has managed the space since its handover in nineteen sixty-seven.

The area around the Square has evolved into a true city center, with lots of restaurants, shopping, hotels, government offices, and event space and transit within a few minutes walk. The area has everything a professional Decatur wedding photographer needs to document a wedding day story.
